Hospital Veterinário do Restelo cardiology service provides it’s patients the most complete, state-of-the-art means of diagnosis and treatment of cardio respiratory diseases.
The most commonly used diagnostic tools are:
- Direct Digital radiography, with access to the radiographic image in just seconds, which allows us to quickly determine the quality of the image as well as perform a rapid diagnostic test, even in some unstable patients.
- Electrocardiography ( EKG), and Holter electrocardiography ( ambulatory, 24hr EKG)
- Echocardiography and Doppler Echocardiography for functional and structural evaluation of the heart, cardiac valves, chambers and great vessels among other structures.
- Pulmonary ultrasound and Echo-guided fine needle aspiration.
- Thoracic CT-scan
- General blood analysis (Renal profile, thyroid hormone measurement, etc.)
- High definition Indirect Oscilometric measurement of arterial blood pressure, and pulmonary pressure measurement through Doppler.
- Arterial and venous blood gasimetry
- 24/7 EKG, Capnographic and pulse oximetry monitoring of critical hospitalized patients
- Tracheal/bronchial endoscopy
Patients are generally directed to our cardiology service when they present symptoms like:
- Cough
- Respiratory difficulties
- Cardiac murmurs during clinical examination
- Irregular cardiac rhythm ( arrhythmias)
- Weakness, syncope or fainting
- Congenital cardiovascular diseases
- Congenital respiratory diseases
- Systemic hypertension
Geriatric patients or patient about to undergo general anaesthesia (pre-anaesthetic check-up) may also be directed for a cardio-respiratory examination.
